McAllister Tower Apartments is owned and operated by the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. The residential apartment skyscraper began its life as a church in the 1920s. Other incarnations include an experimental theatre, the Art Deco–style Empire Hotel and a variety of US federal offices. The building underwent refurbishment when UC Hastings acquired it in 1978, at which point it became living quarters for law students and their families. Later renovations required Epic Scan to provide 3D point cloud data and virtual site access (VSA) of the McAllister building as well as collecting exact as-built documentation of existing conditions.
